Madame Secretary
Naval Observatory, Washington DC
“Dick, I meant to ask you….”
“Yes, honey?”
“Are you sure you are doing the right thing by keeping Don out of the loop?”
“Which ‘Don’…?”
“Rumsfeld...”
“Oh, absolutely; honey!”
“Isn’t he your pal? Besides, he has served this Administration faithfully… I feel guilty about it.”
“This is precisely why we don’t want him to know ahead of time.”
“I don’t understand…”
“Well, Don is a good soldier but he’s good as long as his mind is not clouded with ideological considerations. During the entire pre-Iraq War period, I had him circumvented by guys like Wolfowitz and Perle, otherwise it would have been a blunder!”
“You two go back a long way: if he discovers that you’ve included in your plan men who were his subordinates and not him, he will be mad as hell and, honestly, honey, you can’t blame him…”
