Chapter 6 - Page 1:
Point of No Return
Ava answered her cell phone. “Oh, hi, Sir; how are you doing? ... Yes, it is possible… We can be there in less than fifteen minutes.”
“Who was it?” I asked.
“The Big Boss,” she replied, frowning.
“You mean Interpol’s boss?”
“Yes, he’s in town and he wants to see us at the Willard, where he’s staying.”
“Do we have time to return to the hospital so I can get my car back before they tow it?”
“I am afraid not. Don’t worry about your little ‘toy car’: we’ll get it later. Now, we have an important appointment and we can’t miss it.”
The cabby wasn’t really worried by the traffic or by the signs. Driving a large Crown Victoria, the man appeared to be talkative beyond exasperation. You know what the deal is with cab drivers? When you don’t want to talk, because you have other things on your mind, you encounter one of the chattering, insatiable kind; and when you are in the mood and you feel like engaging in some type of conversation, the guy is mute or, at best, drops a “yes, Sir” or a “no, Sir” here and there throughout your soliloquy. |
